What is Cryotherapy?Cryotherapy can be used to treat or remove superficial skin lesions, avoiding the need for surgery. I apply liquid nitrogen which is (-196℃), from a vacuum flask with a spray nozzle, this spray cools and destroys superficial layers of skin. The treatment only takes a few seconds, then the skin is allowed to warm up. Repeated treatments may be required.
-
What is the price?one lesion: from £40 Multiple lesions price can be discussed
-
Does it hurt?Liquid nitrogen is very cold, it will numb your skin, you may feel a burning/stinging sensation for a short time. During the warming up period the skin may tingle which may then be followed by a dull ache for around 1 to 2 hours. Simple painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be used.
-
What will happen next? There will be some swelling and redness and a blister may form. After a few days the treated area will crust over. The crusted area could take up to 2 to 3 weeks to drop off. Following any severe skin inflammation the healing could take up to six weeks.
-
What lesions can be treated with cryotherapy?I can provide cryotherapy treatments for people with: Skin tags Age spots Milia Warts Verrucae
-
Are there side effects? There is a small risk of a wound infection, Once the area has healed, you may be left with a small scar, the skin may initially be darker (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or lighter than the surrounding skin. This change of pigment may be permanent.
-
What is the aftercare?Immediately after the cryotherapy treatment you will be advised to apply antiseptic cream/lotion as a precaution for a few days, longer if needed. Usually there’s no need to apply a dressing, unless the area needs protecting from rubbing by clothing. If a blister forms, this should be left intact if possible, cover with dressing if needed. Any crust that forms should be allowed to drop off by itself.
-
Can everyone have cryotherapy?I can treat children from the age of 14 years old, as long as accompanied by parent or guardian providing written consent. Cryotherapy treatment may not be as affective with people who’s immunosuppressed. (I will offer advice through email or initial consultation in this situation).
